Scholarship Season is Upon Us

Students hoping to see dollar bills need to actively search for transfer scholarships. Start with the MC Transfer Scholarship Page to find opportunities.

Also check with each transfer school of interest. For most schools, you can type "scholarships" in the search box on the home page to take you to the right spot. Pay close attention to deadlines!

Remember that most scholarship programs require that you file the FAFSA, www.fafsa.ed.gov/ even if you know that you won't qualify for aid based on need. The FAFSA for Fall 2011 can be filed starting January 1, 2011.

The Road to Transfer Involves Completing Classes @ Montgomery College

Registration for MC's Spring 2011 classes opened November 15, 2010. If you haven't registered yet, use these items to get the job done:

• The Link to the MC Online Class Schedule
• The Transfer Advising Page for Choosing MC General Education Courses
• A Planning Grid Use it to build your schedule, in pencil!
• An Application for Graduation - If you plan to finish an associate's degree at MC this Spring or Summer 2011, complete this form and have it reviewed with a counselor or adviser, then submit it to the Admissions Office to graduate in May 2010. • WHY GRADUATE BEFORE YOU GO? Maryland State schools give transfer admissions preference to students who have completed an Associate's degree (an AA, AS or AAT). The Maryland Transfer Policy is shown here.If you aren't quite ready to graduate, remember that you can also transfer back credits to MC to complete a degree. This is an important step to mark your half-way point to a bachelor's degree. Discuss your options with a counselor at MC.

University of Baltimore's Law School - Early Entry Option

This option is available to University of Baltimore students enrolled in the B.S. in Business Administration, B.A. in Government and Public Policy, B.A. in History or B.A. in Jurisprudence program.

This program allows students to use the first year of law school to fulfill the requirements of the last year of undergraduate study; it requires a cumulative cross-institutional grade point average of 3.50 or better as computed by the Law School Data Assembly Service and an LSAT score of 155 or better.

Students enrolled at the Health Systems Management major offered at the Universities at Shady Grove may qualify for UB's Law School - Automatic Admit Option.

University of Maryland College Park - Admissions Guidelines

The information below applies to non-competitive majors at UM. Limited Enrollment Programs have additional admissions requirements.

1. MC Students with an AA degree posted on transcript and a 2.0 GPA: Need to apply by the priority deadline to assure admission. The Priority Deadline for Fall 2011 is March 1st.
   
2. MC Students with 56 credits and a 2.0 and all their credits are earned at MC or another Maryland State school who apply by the priority deadline will also be admitted under the MHEC regulation.
   
3. MC Students with 56 credits and an overall 2.0 GPA with credits earned from private Maryland or out of state institutions may not be admitted to UM under the MHEC regulation. A higher GPA ( (typically, a 3.0 combined GPA from their previous school and work at MC) is required to be considered by UM for admission or wait until AA degree posted to transcript.
   
4. MC Students who do not have the 56 credits or an AA degree showing on their record at the time of application need to have completed EN 102/109, MA 110 or higher, and a 3.0 overall GPA to be competitive for general admission to UM.

Please remember that the MHEC policy states that students earning an AA degree or 56 credits for a Maryland community college are guaranteed admission to a Maryland state school, but it does not specify which school.

Deadlines - Meet Them!

Transfer admission is getting more competitive - all students are encouraged to apply for transfer admission to any school well BEFORE the transfer deadlines posted.

• If you plan to transfer to another school this Spring 2011, apply by November 1, 2010.
• If you plan to transfer to another school next Fall 2011, apply by February 1st 2011 or earlier.

Check each school’s Admissions Page for details. You are usually considered a ‘transfer’ student if you have 12 college credits or more earned at the time that you apply (showing on your transcript with grades). If you have fewer than 12 credits completed at the time you apply, you should discuss this with a counselor. Students with less than 30 credits showing on their transcripts will need to submit a high school transcript and SAT scores. Not sure about this? Paper or Online? Online applications are preferred by most schools. Advantage: you can track your application’s process and quickly follow-up if any pieces of the application are missing.
