UMUC - Online Advising/Information Sessions for Transfer Students

Beginning in February, UMUC will offer virtual events geared toward online community college students. Students can attend these special events from any computer with an in-ternet connection; from home, work, or the community college computer lab. Stay tuned for specific dates and times!

In addition to virtual events, UMUC transfer advisors are at your community college cam-pus throughout the semester.

Students can also reach a transfer advisor via Skype, phone, and e-mail. Students should e-mail communityrelations@umuc.edu to make an appointment.

UMUC Visits for the Fall 2011 Semester

University of Maryland University College will be visiting the Rockville Campus throughout the fall semester to inform students about the MC-UMUC Alliance Program. Representatives will be available to meet with students most Thursdays from 11:00am to 3:00pm and most Tuesday evenings from 4:00pm to 7:00pm in the Counseling Building, room 215 through December 8th.
The dates they will not be here are September 29th, October 6th and November 24th.

Benefits of the Alliance Program include:


  • Waiver of UMUC's $50 admission application fee if you complete the Alliance admission application before completing your associate's degree. The application can be completed online at www.umuc.edu.

  • The simultaneous registrations at Montgomery College and UMUC.

  • Access to the extensive University System of Maryland library, tutoring, writing assistance, career counseling, computer labs, and more.

  • You will also have the opportunity to apply for the Community College Transfer Scholarship. Scholarship recipients receive $3,300 for full-time study or $1,650 for part-time study. Awards can be automatically renewed. Criteria for the scholarship include: Completion of Associates degree from MC, minimum gpa of 3.0 from MC, submssion of UMUC admission and scholarship application and be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen. New UMUC Cybersecurity Scholarship

UMUC is offering a scholarship to outstanding new students who are pursuing a degree in cybersecurity. Qualified students may earn a certificate in as little as six months. Scholarship recipients will receive individualized advising to assist with certificate and bachelor degree completion. Recipients may be awarded $3,300/year for full-time study and are eligible to renew the award for one additional year. This scholarship is available for the 2011-2012 academic year.

UMUC Reverse Transfer Credit Program

UMUC has entered into an exciting partnership that allows students to finish their associate’s degree program through the reverse transfer of UMUC college credits. The goal of the UMUC Reverse Transfer Credit Program is to help students, who transferred to UMUC from a com-munity college without first completing an associate’s degree, to go back and earn a valuable college credential while working on their bachelor's degree at UMUC. Eligible students are able to transfer UMUC credits back to their community college to complete an associate’s de-gree. Students may also be able to save time and money by transferring additional community college credits to UMUC to complete both associate and bachelor degree requirements. April is Transfer Month at UMUC

April is Transfer Month at UMUC! Through the month of April, UMUC will provide extra special attention to community college transfer students. During transfer month, UMUC will be hosting UMUC 411 online classrooms and chats for community college transfer students. UMUC 411 is a free, weeklong orientation pro-gram where prospective students can chat with UMUC advisors, alumni and faculty from all over the world. Visit www.umuc.edu for details.

UMUC Offering Community College Transfer Scholarships for the 2011-2012 Academic Year

UMUC will once again offer Community College Transfer Scholar-ships during the 2011-2012 academic year. We will continue to host instant scholarship days at each campus to award community college students on the spot! This scholarship is awarded to outstanding stu-dents from Alliance partner community colleges. Recipients may be awarded $3300 per year for full-time study or $1650 per year for part-time study. To qualify for the Fall 2011 scholarship, applicants must earn an associate’s degree and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Heard of UMUC, But Want to Know More?


University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is one of the 11 accredited, degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland (USM). UMUC is located in Adelphi, MD (near the UMCP campus), but offers many classes at the Universities of Shady Grove location and online.

UMUC has established a partnership program with Montgomery College called the Alliance. Through the Alliance, you can easily transfer up to 70 credits to UMUC. Other benefits of include:

  1. Waiver of UMUC's $50 admission application fee if you complete the Alliance admission application before completing your associate's degree.
  2. Simultaneous registrations at Montgomery College and UMUC.
  3. Access to the extensive University System of Maryland library, tutoring, writing assistance, career counseling, computer labs, and more.
  4. Earn a $500 scholarship towards a course at UMUC by simultaneously enrolling in at least 3 credits at Montgomery college and 3 credits at UMUC. For qualifying students, the scholarship is good for two consecutive semesters, up to $1000.

You will also have the opportunity to apply for the Community College Transfer Scholarship. Scholarship recipients receive $3,300 for full-time study or $1,650 for part-time study. Awards can be automatically renewed. The criteria for the scholarship include:

  • Completion of the Associate’s degree from MC
  • Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA from MC
  • Submission of the UMUC Alliance or regular application and the scholarship application
  • US citizen or eligible non-citizen status

    Highlights -- New Programs in Maryland

    1. Public Health Science at UMCP-Shady Grove Campus

      The University of Maryland College Park now offers the B.S. degree in Public Health Science at the Universities at Shady Grove. The Public Health Science degree is a science-based program which prepares students to work in the field of public health at the local, state, and international level in all aspects of disease prevention, health promotion, environmental protection, emergency preparedness, and wellness, as well as a host of other public health related areas.     2. Cybersecurity at UMUC

      UMUC has created the first-of-its-kind online cybersecurity degree programs: the BS in Cybersecurity. The major in cybersecurity prepares graduates to be leaders in the protection of data assets. The curriculum focuses on the techniques, policies, operational procedures, and technologies that secure and defend information and information systems, in local as well as more broadly based domains. The availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and non-repudiation of data is examined. The major prepares students for careers as information systems security professionals, senior system managers, and system administrators responsible for information systems and the security of those systems.     UMUC - Admission of F-1 Students

    Effective December 14, 2009, University of Maryland University College (UMUC) stopped issuing I-20s to students who have or are seeking F-1 visas. This was adopted because the university’s online learning environment was not conducive to students on F-1 status, who must satisfy on-site registration and attendance requirements.

    The International Student Advising (ISA) office will continue to fulfill all reporting requirements in SEVIS related to students who have gained full admission to UMUC and were issued I-20s prior to the effective date.

    NEW UMUC Scholarship for MC Students

    The new Bata Student Success/Scholarship program is being offered through UMUC specifically for Montgomery College students.

    Dr. Evelyn Bata Scholarship Program for Student Success

    The Dr. Evelyn Bata Scholarship Program for Student Success will provide scholarships and additional student support services to students who transfer from Montgomery College to the University of Maryland University College. Scholarship recipients must pursue a bachelor’s degree on a part-time basis at UMUC. The recipient must not receive employer tuition. Preference will be given to high demand professional degree programs.

    UMUC Special Advising Days in June 2009

    UMUC will be holding Special Advising Days specifically for Montgomery College students who are interested in transferring to UMUC.

    Advising sessions will be held at the Shady Grove Center on the following dates and times:

    June 10th, 11am and 4pm
    June 11th, 2pm and 6pm
    June 16th, 2pm and 6pm
    June 25th, 10am, 2pm, 6pm

    During these sessions, students will have their admission fee waived, have their evaluation of transfer credits completed, ability to apply for Shady Grove scholarships, talk with an advisor, find out about financial aid and more.
