Transfer of AP Credit to UMD

Please read the attached note from Mary Bell the University of Maryland credit evaluator regarding transfer of AP credits under their new general education program.   There is no limit maximum to the number of AP credits allowed for transfer, but there are some rules in how AP credit is applied in their new general education program.

In summary AP credits & its applicability towards the new General Education program at UMD is that up to 6 AP exams can be used to fulfill the 8 Distributive Studies areas for General Education. In addition to satisfying these 6 Distributive Studies areas, please note that AP exams can also be used to satisfy the Fundamental Studies requirements but again only 6 courses can be used from AP and IB exams towards the Distributive Studies requirement area for General Education.

Transfer Students: Common Application Directions

What is the Common Application?

The Common Application is a college admission application that students may submit to any of 488
member schools. Go to the website to see which institutions require the Common Application. The CA is completed and submitted online. Do not mix-and- match your application, supplement (s), and payment between online and paper submission. Either submit the application, supplement and payment (or fee waiver) online, or submit them all by mail. There are additional forms which need to be printed, given to the appropriate individuals for evaluation or information, and mailed.

As a transfer student, you will need to fill out or provide information for the following forms:
1. Main application (www.commonapp.org; follow all directions through submission for the “Transfer Application Package”)
2. College instructor evaluations: Print the PDF of an evaluation form and give it to your
evaluator, preferably with an addressed, stamped envelope. You may want to share your resume with the faculty member writing your recommendation.
3. College Report: This form needs to be printed and brought to the office of the Associate Dean of
Student Services (CC016). Please note that it is requested that you send your official transcript
along with the College Report form. The Associate Dean’s office will complete the sections based on your academic and disciplinary record, put an official stamp/seal on the document and mail.
(Provide an addressed, stamped envelope (s) for the purpose of mailing).
*Note: if you have worked with a counselor who knows you well and/or has taught you, you may ask the counselor to fill out the form and then bring it to the Associate Dean’s office for the “academic and disciplinary record” piece and the official seal.
4. Final Report: This is generally not necessary for a transfer student, as it refers to high
school work. However, check with your institution to ascertain if they want your high school
transcript and standardized test scores.
5. Mid-term Report: Please check with your transfer institution to determine whether they would
like to receive a mid-term grade report. If so, print the report from MyMC.
6. Essays: Some schools require additional essays, portfolios, and/or an interest statement. Check
with each individual school, regarding their requirements.

Note: Some schools prefer that students send a “completed application,” where the student
gathers all the pieces from the various individuals and mails them together in one envelop.
