UMBC Transfer Admission and Competitive Program Advising Notes

UMBC uses the Online Common Application for transfer students. School Forms and letters of recommendation are OPTIONAL for transfer students. Letters of recommendation may be sent in paper form to the UMBC Admission's Office.


Letters of Recommendation are advisable when a student may be borderline for admission. For most majors, students with a 2.75 or higher are in the range of admissibility. 

Three Departments at UMBC have Competitive Admissions Policies: Engineering, Performing Arts, and Visual Arts. See each policy below:

ENGINEERING: GATEWAY CRITERIA --EFFECTIVE FALL 2009: Applicants admitted Fall 2009 and later may designate engineering as their intended major. Each major has specific GATEWAY courses required and Repeat Policies. See policies at http://www.coeit.umbc.edu/programs/undergraduate-student-services/transfer-information

Engineering Majors at UMBC include Chemical Engineering ; Computer Engineering ; Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering

VISUAL ARTS – Portfolio Requirements - students must submit portfolios by specific dates prior to admission.  For details please visit http://art.umbc.edu/undergraduate/admissions/application_portfolio_process.php

Visual Arts Concentrations are: Animation/Interactive Media; Art History & Museum Studies; Cinematic Arts; Graphic Design; Intermedia; Photography and Print Media

Transfer Application Deadlines:

Fall
Priority - March 15 - Decision letters for complete applications are mailed beginning in late March.

Regular - May 31 - Decision letters for complete applications are mailed beginning in early June.

Spring
Priority – Nov. 1 - Decision letters for complete applications are mailed beginning in late October.

Regular – Dec. 15 - Decision letters for complete applications are mailed in December and January.

TSA – UMBC’s Transfer Student Alliance offers guaranteed admission and scholarships to qualified students. Please encourage students to enroll in TSA early – the program is limited to students who have completed 30 credits or less only, so applying in the first or second semester is a must! www.umbc.edu/tsa/
