The Robert H. Smith School of Business website is now updated with the latest Admissions Information Workshops at USG and UMCP for the Smith School, as well as the Saturday, November 5th Open House at USG. A Bachelors of Science in Management is now offered at Shady Grove. The General Business major has been discontinued as of May, 2011 and has been replaced by a business Management major. All students at Shady Grove will enroll in one of the following four business majors:

Accounting
Management, with specialization in Entrepreneurship
International Business
Marketing

UMUC Visits for the Fall 2011 Semester

University of Maryland University College will be visiting the Rockville Campus throughout the fall semester to inform students about the MC-UMUC Alliance Program. Representatives will be available to meet with students most Thursdays from 11:00am to 3:00pm and most Tuesday evenings from 4:00pm to 7:00pm in the Counseling Building, room 215 through December 8th.
The dates they will not be here are September 29th, October 6th and November 24th.

Benefits of the Alliance Program include:

Waiver of UMUC's $50 admission application fee if you complete the Alliance admission application before completing your associate's degree. The application can be completed online at www.umuc.edu.

The simultaneous registrations at Montgomery College and UMUC.

Access to the extensive University System of Maryland library, tutoring, writing assistance, career counseling, computer labs, and more.

You will also have the opportunity to apply for the Community College Transfer Scholarship. Scholarship recipients receive $3,300 for full-time study or $1,650 for part-time study. Awards can be automatically renewed. Criteria for the scholarship include: Completion of Associates degree from MC, minimum gpa of 3.0 from MC, submssion of UMUC admission and scholarship application and be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen. Deciding When to Transfer

If your goal is to transfer to a four-year college or university, it’s never too early to start planning. Here are some suggestions to get ready for transfer:

Transfer after Two Years at MC

This is often the best way to assure a smooth transfer to four-year schools. Students should complete an Associate’s degree (60 credits). The cost savings of finishing the first two years at a community college is considerable, and the majority of transfer scholarships are granted to students who have completed a degree. An Associate’s degree helps assure you admission to most Maryland schools; however, you still need to line up your courses to fit specific majors. See any counselor or departmental advisor for assistance in choosing courses and planning for transfer. Consider General Studies as the most flexible transfer degree; or, if you have a specific major in mind, such as Engineering or Business, discuss your degree options with a departmental advisor.

WHEN TO APPLY: See the Deadlines section below; you should start your application months before the actual final deadline which is usually Oct. 1 to be admitted for Spring and from Feb. 15 to March 1 for Fall admission to most schools.

Transfer after One Year at MC

Students with this goal need to earn 30 credits, or roughly two- to three-semester’s worth of credit courses. Most schools want to see completion of 12 credits (four courses) completed after high school graduation and an overall grade point average of a 3.0 or higher by the end of the Fall to be considered a true “transfer” student.

WHEN TO APPLY: If you were admissible as a high school senior (that is, if your grade point average [GPA] and SAT scores met the school's freshman admission requirements), you can apply from October 2011 onward for a Fall 2012 transfer admission. Watch each school's Transfer Admissions webpage to find out when the transfer application becomes available. If your high school grades & SAT’s did not match the freshman admissions profile, then most schools will want to see two semester's worth of grades completed at Montgomery College (grades from Fall 2011 & Spring 2012) to admit you. You'll still need to submit your high school record and SAT's, but your grades from Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 will be THE most important factor. You will need to send a second copy of your transcript at the end of Spring 2012 before they can make a final decision to admit you. UMCP specifically will not consider you as a transfer
student until you complete 30 credits including EN 102 and MA 110 or higher.

Transfer after One Semester at MC

Most students with this goal have been admitted to another school during their high school senior year, receiving a “Spring Admission” to the Freshman Class. Spring Admits to Univ. of Maryland, College Park should stay in close touch with UMCP this Fall if on-campus housing is desired. UMCP guarantees admission to Spring Admits regardless of how many credits are taken at MC. Schools like UMBC and Salisbury will make a decision on Spring admission after you complete the recommended number of credits at MC this Fall. For UMBC, 14 credits are required; for Salisbury, it’s 12 credits; note that DS courses do not count in the 12 or 14 credits at those schools. In all cases, be sure to request that a final copy of your transcript be sent to your destination school at the end of December.

Beware of Transfer Myths!

"I can earn an Associate's degree and all of my credits will transfer to any Maryland school."

This myth is based on the fact that completion of an Associate's degree guarantees students admission to a Maryland public school, but not necessarily admission to their first choice of a school. Many schools are experiencing increases in transfer applications and admit Associate's holders on a space-available basis. The dangerous part of this myth is that "all credits will transfer" - not true! Students must choose classes that meet the requirements of a specific major or majors at the school they would like to attend. Work with an MC adviser to find the right courses for your future transfer, and use tools like the MC Transfer Page, www.montgomerycollege.edu/transfer and ARTSYS - the Maryland State Transfer Information site, http://artweb.usmd.edu/

"I can apply to the University of Maryland - College Park as an Undecided Major and then try to get into the Business or Engineering major after I get there."

UMCP has very specific rules about the timing of your entrance into their competitive majors, called Limited Enrollment Programs. LEP's at UMCP are: You should examine the LEP Advising pages carefully to time your admission into any LEP. Work with an MC adviser to plan your transfer! New UMUC Cybersecurity Scholarship

UMUC is offering a scholarship to outstanding new students who are pursuing a degree in cybersecurity. Qualified students may earn a certificate in as little as six months. Scholarship recipients will receive individualized advising to assist with certificate and bachelor degree completion. UMUC Reverse Transfer Credit Program

UMUC has entered into an exciting partnership that allows students to finish their associate’s degree program through the reverse transfer of UMUC college credits. The goal of the UMUC Reverse Transfer Credit Program is to help students, who transferred to UMUC from a com-munity college without first completing an associate’s degree, to go back and earn a valuable college credential while working on their bachelor's degree at UMUC. Eligible students are able to transfer UMUC credits back to their community college to complete an associate’s de-gree. Students may also be able to save time and money by transferring additional community college credits to UMUC to complete both associate and bachelor degree requirements. Students who submit their applications after March 1 but by the regular June 1 deadline will receive their decision in the first week of July. Please note that the University of Maryland no longer releases transfer admission decisions on a rolling basis.

TRANSFER ADMISSION TO THE ROBERT H. SMITH SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
Transfer applicants applying to the University of Maryland who apply to the Business school are first informed of their admission to the University. Once admitted, their applications are then reviewed for admission to the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Students will be informed via email of their admission to the Smith school in late-June or mid-August.

It is imperative that the University of Maryland receive students' complete academic records by the competitive review dates. Please remind your students/advisees who are applying to the Robert H. Smith School of Business to submit an updated transcript with spring semester grades as soon as the semester is over and grades become available. The regular transfer application deadline for the fall semester is June 1.

Winthrop Univesrity - Scholarships for Transfer Students

For students that completed 30 credit hours (excluding remedial or developmental courses) or more of college level work, there are two different merit based scholarships. Both scholarship are guaranteed for all students as long as the scholarship requirements are met!

If you transfer with a GPA between a 3.5 and a 3.69 you qualify for a USD 5,000 out of state tuition waiver and a USD 500 stipend per year.

If you transfer with 3.7 GPA or above, you qualify for a USD 10,000 out of state tuition waiver and will receive a USD 500 stipend per year.

New Application Deadlines: Beginning Fall 2011, application deadlines, for both external transfer and internal applicants to the Smith School of Business, are March 1 for fall applicants and October 1 for spring applicants. Notification dates will be April 1 for fall applicants and November 1 for spring applicants.

Admission criteria including gateway requirements, and the competitive review process will remain in place. However, students are required to apply during the semester in which they will earn 60 credits, after having completed 45 credits. Both internal and external applicants will be notified that they may be admitted in the semester during which they are finishing the necessary CORE courses and up to two gateway courses.

Admission will be offered to competitive applicants with the condition that students successfully complete courses in progress. Successful completion of courses in progress requires a minimum grade of 2.0 in each gateway course, and an overall semester grade point average of 3.0. Those who do not meet this condition will be notified that their Smith School admission is rescinded.

For MC Students, this means:

depending on when you apply (during the semester you are completing your 60th credit) there will be three reviews of the business school applicants March 1st, June 15th and August 1st.
you can be in process of AC202 or either EC 201 or EC 202 -- for a total of two of the gateway courses the semester you are undergoing the review at 60 credits
after your application has been reviewed, you may be admitted provisionally to the Smith school will only be offered final admission after your grades are posted for your final semester here at MC

University of Baltimore - New & Renamed Majors!

Integrated Arts - In the new B.A. in Integrated Arts program, students will immerse themselves in an artistic world, experiencing arts production and performance while studying arts analysis and management. They’ll concentrate in the art that interests them most: visual art, music, theater, dance, creative writing, and filmmaking. They’ll take courses in arts production and performance, history, appreciation and analysis of the arts, government and business as they relate to the arts, and technology’s impact on and importance to the arts. They’ll learn about the cultural, political and economic aspects of the arts while specializing in areas like creative writing, creative multimedia, graphic design, visual arts, theater, dance, music, photography and filmmaking. When they graduate, they’ll be prepared to work for businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies that deal in, represent or interact with artists and the arts.

Real Estate and Economic Development, Construction Management – Students who successfully complete an associate’s degree in Construction Management (or a related field) are invited to apply for our B.S. in Real Estate and Economic Development. As part of the 60 transfer credits, we will waive 15 credits of the upper division electives, giving students the opportunity to complete the major requirements and general education requirements within the 120 credit degree program. Students will graduate with a B.S. in Real Estate and Economic Development.

Information Systems and Technology Management (formally Management Information Systems) - Combining business knowledge with an emphasis on information systems technologies and management, the Information Systems and Technology Management program will teach how to analyze work flow and design information systems or Web sites, implement middleware that bridges mainframes and the Internet, build and manage networks and intranets, conceptualize and implement complex databases, set up security measures and build business-to-business networks. March 1, 2011 is the deadline for applications to the Paul Peck Humanities Institute summer internships at the Library of Congress and U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Deadlines for all three institutions for fall placement is June 15, 2011.

Professor Kelly Rudin, internship coordinator, is willing to help students plan and polish their application essays – If you get them to her by February 22,2011.

About the PPHI Internship Program:

This internship program enables MC students to participate in professional museum and library activities at the Library of Congress and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Summer internships run the length of summer I plus summer II, with 20 hours spent per week at the internship site as well as enrollment in a three-credit MC Honors course (HP-275PA/PB/PG). The application review process is competitive.

Heard of UMUC, But Want to Know More?

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is one of the 11 accredited, degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland (USM). UMUC is located in Adelphi, MD (near the UMCP campus), but offers many classes at the Universities of Shady Grove location and online.

UMUC has established a partnership program with Montgomery College called the Alliance. Through the Alliance, you can easily transfer up to 70 credits to UMUC. Other benefits of include:

Preparing for Fall 2011 Engineering Transfer

As an engineering student, it is important to begin early planning and preparation for transfer to a four-year bachelor degree program. LIMITED ENROLLMENT PROGRAMS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND

Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP) are competitive majors that have limited space and specific requirements beyond those required for general admission. Transfer students applying to the University of Maryland who would like to major in a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) must fulfill a specific set of gateway requirements. A student who is not initially admitted into an LEP may be admitted to the university and placed in Letters and Sciences for advising, or in an alternate major. LEP programs include Architecture, Business, Communication, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Policy-Biodiversity and Conservation, Engineering, Government and Politics, Journalism, Landscape Architecture and Psychology.

UMCP Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship (TAES)

TAES is a highly competitive two-year scholarship, that is awarded to 30 exceptional transfer students for four consecutive semesters. All application materials are due by Tuesday, March 1, 2011.

It is critical that students meet the following criteria to apply for this scholarship:

Be a resident of the state of Maryland
Be a permanent resident or a U.S. Citizen
Have an overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale from all college work including work from institutions other than Maryland community colleges
Completion of 56 credits or an Associate’s Degree from a Maryland Community College
A new applicant to the University of Maryland, College Park for the Fall 2011 semester or newly admitted student at Maryland for Spring 2011

Steps to Applying for Transfer Admission

Complete the application for transfer admission - for best consideration for admission and for scholarships & financial aid, apply well before suggested deadlines. Aim for February 1st (or earlier!) for most schools.

Apply on-line when possible. This is a faster method and allows you to track your application's progress.

Request that an official copy of your MC transcript be sent to the school(s) of interest. There is a $5 fee per MC transcript. If you request a transcript to be sent to a Maryland public four-year institution, your transcript will be sent electronically. Maryland schools prefer this way to receive your transcript - do NOT hand-carry transcripts to Maryland state schools - this will slow up your application process.

If you have fewer than 30 credits showing on your transcript at the time of application, you will probably be asked to submit your high school record and SAT scores as well. Don't worry over this - your college performance is the deciding factor in most cases, not your high school information. Go to your former high school guidance office to request a transcript to send with your admissions application. Request SAT scores from www.collegeboard.org/.

Most schools will not begin to consider transfer applications until March 1. You should, however, get a reply that acknowledges receipt of your application. If you don't hear anything from the school 4 weeks after submitting the application, contact them to verify that it arrived.

The essay - don't agonize over it, get it done! YES, it's important, but it is not THE determining factor (your grades in college classes are the most important point for admissions). Ask for help at the MC Writing Center, or from a professor or counselor - and be sure to proofread your final draft. If the essay is optional , then impress the school by completing it.

If you have any telephone conversations with an admissions office representative about your application, be sure to write down the name of the person who spoke with you.

Recommendations from college instructors - submit these ONLY IF they are required. Some schools may not request recommendations - they will admit you on the basis of your college record. When requesting recommendations from professors, allow a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the deadline. Provide the professor with a brief resume of your experience and academic goals (here's a link to an information questionnaire you can fill in for instructors) - this gives the professor the ability to elaborate on your good points and interests. If you're going to apply to multiple schools, give the instructor all the forms at once, or warn them that more are coming - most will save the letters that they write in case additional letters are needed.

University of Maryland College Park - Admissions Guidelines

The information below applies to non-competitive majors at UM. Limited Enrollment Programs have additional admissions requirements.

MC Students with an AA degree posted on transcript and a 2.0 GPA: Need to apply by the priority deadline to assure admission. The Priority Deadline for Fall 2011 is March 1st.
MC Students with 56 credits and a 2.0 and all their credits are earned at MC or another Maryland State school who apply by the priority deadline will also be admitted under the MHEC regulation.
MC Students with 56 credits and an overall 2.0 GPA with credits earned from private Maryland or out of state institutions may not be admitted to UM under the MHEC regulation. A higher GPA ( (typically, a 3.0 combined GPA from their previous school and work at MC) is required to be considered by UM for admission or wait until AA degree posted to transcript.
MC Students who do not have the 56 credits or an AA degree showing on their record at the time of application need to have completed EN 102/109, MA 110 or higher, and a 3.0 overall GPA to be competitive for general admission to UM.

Please remember that the MHEC policy states that students earning an AA degree or 56 credits for a Maryland community college are guaranteed admission to a Maryland state school, but it does not specify which school.

Deadlines - Meet Them!

Transfer admission is getting more competitive - all students are encouraged to apply for transfer admission to any school well BEFORE the transfer deadlines posted.

If you plan to transfer to another school this Spring 2011, apply by November 1, 2010.
If you plan to transfer to another school next Fall 2011, apply by February 1st 2011 or earlier.

Check each school’s Admissions Page for details. You are usually considered a ‘transfer’ student if you have 12 college credits or more earned at the time that you apply (showing on your transcript with grades). If you have fewer than 12 credits completed at the time you apply, you should discuss this with a counselor. Students with less than 30 credits showing on their transcripts will need to submit a high school transcript and SAT scores. Not sure about this? E-mail a transfer counselor at MC – or see a counselor on campus.

Paper or Online? Online applications are preferred by most schools. Advantage: you can track your application’s process and quickly follow-up if any pieces of the application are missing.

Research Majors by Looking at the Big Picture

As a student at Montgomery College, it’s easy to focus on the first two years of courses for a major without looking at the big picture. To choose a major carefully, you’ll need to see what the upper-level courses look like – what will you take in your junior and senior year?

Some schools offer charts which show course titles required – Salisbury University gives students a good overview of all the courses, 120 credits, required for a degree. Here is the full list of Salisbury’s Majors: www.salisbury.edu/checklists/undergrad.html These are course titles for Exercise Science at Salisbury University.

Here's another example of courses required at the junior and senior-level for Environmental Studies, at Shenandoah University, VA

Reading upper-level course descriptions gives you the full picture of what you’ll actually be studying. Some schools will divide information by ‘undergraduate’ (bachelor’s degrees) and ‘graduate’ – master’s and doctoral degrees available after you finish your four-year undergraduate work.

You can roughly estimate that a four-year degree consists of 40 courses (5 per semester, 10 per year) – which 40 courses will you need for YOUR degree?

The Paul Peck Humanities Institute is actively recruiting to fill spring 2011 internship positions within the Smithsonian Institution (SI), Library of Congress (LOC), and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM). Consider applying for this life-altering experience.

Eligible students have at least 15 MC credits, a GPA of 3.4 and have completed EN102 with a grade of B.

Footballs and Residence Halls at Stevenson University

Stevenson University now has a new football team, with 120 football players from in and out of state. Stevenson football will be joining the Middle Atlantic Conference as an associate member.

Stevenson is currently recruiting students for a marching band to become active in fall 2011.

In the next 30 to 60 days they will break ground for a new stadium. In the near future they will also begin construction on two new residence halls which will be ready for fall 2011 occupancy.

Public Health Science at UMCP-Shady Grove Campus

Cybersecurity at UMUC

UMUC has created the first-of-its-kind online cybersecurity degree programs: the BS in Cybersecurity. The major in cybersecurity prepares graduates to be leaders in the protection of data assets. The regular application deadline for Spring 2011 transfer admission is November 15, 2010. Because admission is competitive and space is limited, you are encouraged to apply before or by the deadline.

Applications for Spring 2011 admission are already being reviewed. Students who have met the August 1 priority deadline can expect to hear their decision in the first week of October. Transfer admission decisions will be released in batches. Therefore, applicants who complete their applications by the regular deadline will receive their decisions in mid-December.

Transfer admission to the University of Maryland is increasingly competitive. Over 7000 applications for a transfer class of 1750 was received for Fall 2010. Transfer admission to all Maryland public schools has become increasingly competitive. U. of MD - College Park, Towson, UMBC, and Salisbury, among others, have reported dramatic increases in transfer applications for Fall 2010. All Maryland state-supported schools have seen a rise in MD residents who previously went to out-of-state schools; these students are transferring back to MD system schools for economic reasons. The result: greater competition for transfer student seats. Because transfer admission has become so competitive and space is limited, all students are encouraged to apply for transfer admission to any school well BEFORE the transfer deadlines posted.

The Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (MTAP) guarantees transfer admission to Montgomery College students who complete 30 or more credits including EN 102/109 and MA 110 or higher and who have a 3.0 grade point average (for all majors except those with more competitive requirements, aka Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP's). In addition to guaranteed admission, MTAP students are invited to participate in advising information sessions for all majors while enrolled at MC, and they have opportunities to take courses at UM at a reduced price while enrolled as students at MC.

TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIPS - Make Yourself an Attractive Scholarship Candidate

Merit scholarships are typically awarded on the basis of academic, athletic or artistic merit, in addition to special interests. Some merit scholarships also consider financial need, but rewarding talent is the goal of many programs. Programs want students who have "demonstrated academic excellence and have leadership qualities." So how do you get there?

Get involved in activities! Join student clubs, take on leadership roles, look into internships, community service, volunteer work... Look for ideas @ your campus's Office of Student Life.

Take challenging courses! Honors classes (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 required) allow you to demonstrate your academic ability and cultivate relationships with professors. In regular classes, get to know your professors. They are the people who will write letters of recommendation on your behalf. Choose classes with the assistance of an MC counselor - don't self advise!

Look at small, private colleges and universities in addition to state schools. Small, private schools often offer more generous awards to students than do state schools.

Consider other specialized schools, such as women's colleges and historically black colleges and universities where there may be additional opportunities.

Questions We Hear from Fall 2010 Transfer Hopefuls

“Is it TOO LATE?” and “I haven’t HEARD yet!”

Current Montgomery College students hoping to transfer to a four-year institution next Fall 2010 may find that it IS too late to begin an application to some schools. Many schools have a preferred transfer deadline of March 1, 2010 for a Fall transfer. Even when a school’s website says “Final deadline: June 1”, the critical question is whether spaces are still available. Schools often consider applications in the order that they were received. To answer the question “Is it TOO LATE?” you’ll need to pick up the phone and call a school’s admissions office. Ask to speak to someone who specializes in transfer admissions, and be specific: “I have 47 credits completed at MC and a GPA of 2.93 – is your school still admitting transfer students for Fall 2010?” The answer could be yes, but do call to see whether it’s worth your time and effort to complete an application.

“I haven’t HEARD yet!”

If you applied for transfer admission more than 3 weeks ago and you haven’t heard anything, take the following steps:

1) Check the online application system at the school to be sure all of your materials have been received: Application / Transcript from MC showing your current grades / High School transcript & SAT scores IF the school asked you to provide them (usually if you had less than 30 credits on your MC transcript) If everything seems to have been received, and you haven’t heard anything by e-mail or letter, CALL the Admissions Office directly.

2) If the school is waiting for your final transcript, be sure that you’ve sent your request to MC and marked the box “Hold for Final Grades”. You can do this NOW. Many transfer institutions are waiting to see a final transcript from Spring 2010 in order to make a decision on your admission.

Once admitted, their applications are reviewed for admission to the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Students will be informed via email of their admission to the Smith school in the second week of June and the second week of August.

Two New Majors at the University of Baltimore

UB will begin offering two new degree programs this fall. For the fall 2010/spring 2011 academic year, these programs will only be available for students with less than 45 credits.

Bachelors of Arts in International Studies

The B.A. in International Studies is housed in the School of Public Affairs. It is an interdisciplinary program combining courses from the social sciences, history, philosophy, and business. The program’s focus will be on the study of the international system as a political, social, and economic system comprised of the interactions of states, public and private institutions, and people and is designed for students who would like to gain a greater understanding of the global community and who wish to equip themselves better to perform in that community. This course of study will also provide a foundation for graduate work in international business, international law, and international studies. Bachelors of Arts in Environmental Sustainability and Human Ecology

The B.A. in Environmental Sustainability and Human Ecology is housed in the Division of Liberal Studies. The program examines the interaction of people with their environment using a multi-faceted, cross-disciplinary approach. Students will receive a firm grounding in environmental science, not only through learning about the diversity of life and ecosystems of the world, but also through the hands-on study of the Chesapeake Bay watershed and its immediate environs. Planning to Transfer in Fall 2010?

If you want to transfer from MC to another school for Fall 2010, the time to apply is NOW (or even, yesterday!). Transfer admissions applications are on the rise at all Maryland public four-year schools. Early applications, sent before published transfer deadlines, are the key to acceptance.

Things you need to do:

Find the online transfer application of the school(s) to which you wish to apply. Check the Admissions Page website for online application directions.
Complete a transcript request form ($5 fee) to send your official MC transcript to school(s). Note that MC sends your transcripts electronically to Maryland State schools, this is the fastest way to do it - DO NOT send a paper transcript to a MD state school, it slows down the process! www.montgomerycollege.edu/admissions/StudentForms/transcript.pdf
Send your high school record and SAT scores if you have less than 30 credits showing as COMPLETED on your MC transcript. Contact your high school's registrar for the transcript, and request a copy of your SAT scores from the collegeboard.org. Some schools, like Salisbury, require fewer completed credits (24 total) – check with each school’s transfer admissions requirements.
FINISH that essay - complete the essay if one is required; don’t let this interfere with finishing your application, get it DONE and send it in! Application Essay Tips.
Letters of recommendation - request them ONLY if they are required. Many schools do NOT want letters of recommendation. Don’t overwhelm your professors with requests if they are not required. Read more about Letters of Recommendation here.
Make a plan for housing - many schools are short on space for on-campus dorm rooms for transfer students. Contact the On-Campus Housing Office for details; if on-campus housing is not available, most schools have an Off-Campus Housing website to give you ideas about how to find nearby rooms or apartments.
Investigate scholarships and financial aid – follow the many suggestions here.
Finally, give yourself a reality check – does your overall grade point average meet the preferred minimums for transfer consideration? At the University of Maryland, College Park, a total GPA of 3.0 is the minimum GPA to be a realistic candidate. Many majors have additional competitive requirements (called LEP Programs). Most other MD state schools prefer a 2.5 overall GPA or higher. You can call a school’s Admissions Office to ask about overall GPA expectations for transfer students.

COMPLETE APPLICATIONS BEFORE DEADLINES! If you wait to send in an application by the printed transfer application deadline, you may be too late. Many state schools (Towson, Salisbury) look at applications in the order they are received and admit qualified students until they run out of space.

Only one “gateway” or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once. Repeats include withdrawals from courses noted by a W on the transcript. A student who has repeated two gateway courses will be denied admission. Any student denied admission to the major may appeal directly to the Assistant Dean of the College (MC adviser’s note: very few students are granted admission by an appeal, typically only when a student has a stellar overall GPA and an unusual circumstance to explain why more than one gateway was repeated.)
Students may apply only once to an LEP. In most LEP programs, there is only one time frame to apply, during the semester when the 60th credit is earned for transfer students.
Students who apply to UM are first admitted to the University, then to LEP Programs. The LEP reviews do not require a second application; note that most decisions on LEP majors are made after the current semester is over when final grades are available (for example, Business admits are made in June after Spring grades are received).

Although Towson gives priority to students who have an AA or 56 credits with a 2.0 or higher, this admissions is based on space availability. It’s not always necessary to complete an AA before you go, although completion of an Associates degree can be helpful if:

Your overall GPA at MC is less than a 2.5 – Some Maryland public schools will accept students who have completed either an AA or 56 credits if their overall GPA is a 2.0 or higher. See the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Guide to Transfer or ask a counselor. Of course, your chances of surviving at the next school are better with a higher GPA, so aim high. You started at another college where your overall GPA was below a 2.5 GPA - finishing an AA degree at MC will help you improve your chances of admission to a Maryland public school.
Your native language is not English – UMCP requests that students whose native language is not English either submit TOEFL scores or complete an AA degree to demonstrate their proficiency of English.
You want to transfer with junior status – it’s economical to earn as many credits as you can before you go, as long as the courses you’re taking fit your major at your four-year destination. Why not wrap those 60 credits into an AA degree along the way? Remember that the key to course transferability is getting advised each semester for help in choosing courses. Just presenting a completed AA degree does NOT mean that all courses taken will transfer to a four-year school. Check to see how close you are to earning an AA degree here.

UMUC - Admission of F-1 Students

Effective December 14, 2009, University of Maryland University College (UMUC) stopped issuing I-20s to students who have or are seeking F-1 visas. This was adopted because the university’s online learning environment was not conducive to students on F-1 status, who must satisfy on-site registration and attendance requirements.

The International Student Advising (ISA) office will continue to fulfill all reporting requirements in SEVIS related to students who have gained full admission to UMUC and were issued I-20s prior to the effective date.

University of Maryland Pre-Transfer Advising Services Update

Due to changes in staffing, the University of Maryland Pre-Transfer Advising Services have changed. They will not be visiting MC campuses to meet with students.

Students can schedule 30 minute in person appointments to meet with an advisor from the website (www.transferadvising.umd/edu/) or come to walk in hours which are also posted on the website. Telephone and AOL Instant Messaging appointments can be scheduled as well.

Students looking to receive an unofficial audit should should fax(301.314.9896) or email (transferadvising@umd.edu) their unofficial transcript or send a completed pre-advising worksheet (http://www.transferadvising.umd.edu/) at least two business days prior to their visit.

Student emails and voicemail messages will be responded to within 3 to 5 business days. Students are encouraged to send questions via email in order to receive a more timely response.

Applying BEFORE Deadlines Makes a Difference in the Race for Transfer Space

Although the deadline for transfer applications is usually later than the deadline for high school seniors seeking freshman admission, as competition for transfer spaces increases, MC transfer counselors suggest working on applications now (November-December) if you want to transfer to another school next Fall 2010. The steps to apply depend on how many credits you have on your college transcript.

If you have 0-29 credits completed, then:

Work on your transfer application now (November 2009) and submit it at the end of this month or in December. Use the electronic application at the school’s website rather than a paper application as this allows you to track the progress of your application.
Contact your high school to have your official high school transcript sent.
Contact the College Board to have your SAT scores sent
Complete the essay, even if it’s optional, and indicate that you are a freshman at Montgomery College.
Send copies of your MC transcript in this sequence: 1 at the end of this Fall 2009 semester, and another at the end of the Spring 2010 semester.
Check to see whether recommendations are required or suggested. If NOT, do not send recommendations – your application is usually judged on the basis of your Montgomery College performance – the grades you’ve earned in your classes.

Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship

The Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship application process has started. The process is very detailed and extensive. The JKC Foundation will award approximately 50 scholarships to outstanding transfer students who will be attending four year institutions in the Fall of 2010. The maximum award available per student is $30,000 per year.

Scholars may use the award to attend any accredited college or university in the US or abroad in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree. The award is renewed annually provided the Scholar has maintained high academic performance, exhibited good conduct, made significant progress toward a degree, and complied with the Foundation's administrative requirements and request.

The minimum eligibility criteria is:

Be a current student at an accredited US community college with sophomore status by December 31, 2009 or be a recent graduate,
Have a cumulative grade point average of a 3.50 or better,
Plan to transfer to a four year college/university in the Fall, 2010
Be nominated by his/her two year institution, and
Have not previously been nominated for the JKCooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

UMCP - Biological Sciences: Math Requirement

If you plan to transfer to UMCP in the Biological Sciences Degree Program, the math requirement has changed. Starting Fall 2009, they will will no longer accept Applied Calculus sequence -- MA160/MA161 (MATH220/221 at UMCP). Instead, students are advised to take MA 181/182 (MATH 140/141 at UMCP).

New Chemical and Life Sciences Limited Enrollment Program at UMCP

Effective Fall 2010, the College of Chemical and Life Sciences (CLFS) at the University of Maryland will become a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP). University of Baltimore (UB) Continues to Grow and May Have Scholarship Money for You!

UB continues to grow and expand. The University has had a double digit growth in enrollment over the last three years; mainly in the undergraduate population, with new transfer enrollment up 11% in fall 2009. University of Maryland College Park Transfer Admission Deadline Update

Transfer admission to the University of Maryland has become increasingly competitive. They have received over 7000 applications for a transfer class of 1900 for Fall 2009. The Admissions Committee considers each application for transfer admission individually, reviewing the student's academic record, grades received in all college-level courses, and the rigor of the student's academic program. Completion of Fundamental Studies English and mathematics is critical for all transfer applicants.

The application deadline for Spring 2010 tranfer admission is November 15, 2009. Because admission has become so competitive and space is limited you students are encouraged to apply BEFORE the deadline. The Admissions office has already begun reviewing applications for the Spring 2010 semester and plan to release their first batch of transfer admission decisions by the third week of September.

The international student deadline and students holding F-1 or J-1 Visa needed to apply by August 1st.

UMCP's Engineering Programs Now Accepts More Arts Distribution Courses!

The University of Maryland's Clark School of Engineering now accepts all Arts courses on the MC General Education list, not just those which are theory-based.

Previously, transfer students were restricted to taking theory-based (lecture) rather than studio arts courses (example: AR 101 Drawing I) to fulfill UMCP's HA - Arts requirement.

The one EXCEPTION within MC's Gen Ed Arts for ALL UMCP-bound students is MC's CG 120, Computer Arts and Illustration. CG 120 is not accepted as an Arts (HA) course at UM for any major; instead, it is accepted as an HO course, Humanities Other.

Fall 2009 - University of Maryland College Park: Transfer Admission Update

University of Maryland College Park is no longer accepting applications for transfer admission for the Fall 2009 semester. Because of limited space availability, it is unlikely that UMCP will be able to review applications submitted after the June 1 deadline this year. Applications received after the June 1 deadline that are not reviewed for Fall 2009 may be considered for admission in Spring 2010.

The Spring 2010 application for admission will be available online beginning July 20, 2009.

Do "D" Grades Transfer to Maryland Public Schools?

The answer is usually "no". Keep in mind that majors with competitive requirements (e.g., nursing, business, etc.) may have a "minimum B" or "min. C" requirement for specific courses. Also, grades of 'D' pull down your overall GPA.

However, under some circumstances the 'D' will be accepted. Here is the response from the Maryland Higher Education Commission Student Guide to Transfer

"'D' grades will be accepted in transfer if the Maryland public college to which you are applying also accepts a 'D' for native students. A 'D' grade earned in a general education course that meets a general education requirement at a sending institution, which has designated that course as meeting a general education requirement, will transfer and meet a general education requirement at the receiving institution."

When Maryland Students Want to Major in Ocean Engineering, Commercial Music, or Fabric Design......they look into the Academic Common Market!

Study in a specialized field at an out-of-state college, while paying in-state tuition rates. Residents of 15 states may participate in the Southern Regional Education Board's Academic Common Market, an agreement that enables students to pursue unique majors offered at public institutions in the other SREB states while paying in-state tuition.

Savings to both states and students are significant. The state saves because the Common Market provides costly, specialized programs that otherwise would have to be duplicated. If the public institutions in Maryland do not offer degree programs in a student's field of study, it may be possible to arrange a waiver of out-of-state tuition to attend a cooperating public institution of higher education in another participating state.

Through a pilot arrangement with the Electronic Campus of the Southern Regional Education Board, some degree programs are being offered electronically at in-state tuition rates. Transfer Deadlines are Becoming Critically Important!

Many students discovered the hard way this semester that admission for transfer students at Maryland public institutions is BOOMING.

The MHEC Transfer Policy says that any student with 56 credits or an AA degree “will not be denied admission to a MD public institution.” You can be assured that a MD school will take you, but not necessarily the one you want to attend.

The key is to apply EARLY for transfer, well before the published deadline. An application is considered late if the supporting materials are not in on time, so it’s especially important that transcripts are submitted by the deadline as well. Except for competitive majors (like Business at UMCP), most schools admit qualified students in the order that they applied, usually making decisions beginning in October for the Spring semester and March 1 for the Fall semester.
